The Stages SB20 smart bike uses both Bluetooth and ANT+ connections, just like our power meters. This means that it can be connected to a wide variety of devices, from cycling computers to mobile devices, and even laptop computers.
For cycling computers, the bike uses the ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS controllable trainer profiles. If your head unit is compatible with either of these connection profiles, you can run a workout on your head unit and have it control the resistance automatically to follow your workout (erg mode). If your head unit is not compatible with controllable trainers, you can still use the bike as a power meter and use the shift buttons to control the resistance.
For mobile devices and laptops, a compatible app to connect to the bike is highly recommended. The Stages smart bike works with TrainerRoad, Zwift, Wahoo X, Rouvy, and many other applications that support controllable trainers and power meters. Note that for some laptops, an ANT+ or Bluetooth dongle may be required.
No device? No problem. You can still ride the bike using the manual controls. This works great for other riders of the bike within your home or riders just starting out who have not committed to a particular device or service. You can also follow along with spin classes and group workouts using the gears to change resistance while watching on your personal device.
