A step-by-step guide to replacing the right side belt guard.

  • Estimated time required: 10 minutes.

Tools required

  • 3 mm hex key
  • 15 mm pedal wrench or narrow 15 mm open-ended wrench for pedals with wrench flats, or correctly sized hex key for all other types.

Replacement parts required

Replacement instructions

  1. Unplug the bike.
Remove the power connector from the bike behind the rear leg before starting the repair.
  2. Remove the plastic belt guard cap from the front of the bike.
    1. Use a 3 mm hex key to loosen and remove the two longer screws.

Note: You need to slide the cap forward and rotate the cap away from the bike to remove it from the 2 shoulder bolts holding the cap in place.
  3. Remove the right pedal, if installed.
    1. Use a 15 mm pedal wrench (or corresponding hex key) to remove the right-side pedal by turning it counter-clockwise and set aside for reassembly later.
  4. Remove the right plastic belt guard.
    1. Starting at the front of the guard (near the flywheel), use a 3 mm hex key (or small ratcheting tool to assist with the tight angle) to loosen the 2 screws holding the front of the guard at least 2 turns.

    2. Use a 3 mm hex key to remove the 7 screws and washers around the perimeter of the plastic guard, set aside for reassembly.

Note: 4 of the screws are longer than the other 3.
The long screws are used to connect the guard to the left belt guard (#1,5,6,7).
The short screws are used to connect the guard to the steel frame (#2,3,4).

    3. Align the right crank in the 6 o’clock position.
    4. Pull down and away from the bike on the back of the guard.

    5. Pay particular attention to this area when removing the guard, avoiding damage to the rubber grommet piece.

    6. Pushing downward and upward can help work the front of the plastic guard free from the 2 front screws.
Note: If guard is difficult to remove, further loosen the two front screws.

    7. Rotate the top of the plastic guard away from the bike, eventually working it down along the crank arm and finally off the bike.
Note: Take care not to rotate the crank at this time, it can be difficult to move if the belt is touching the plastic guard.
    8. A complete removal should reveal the belt and pulley.

Tip: Use your hands to loosen the 2 screws that hold the front of the guard a few turns at this time to make reassembly easier at the end of the install.

  5. Install the new right belt guard.
    1. Starting with the crank arm facing down, insert the crank arm into the opening in the plastic guard and slowly work the guard up and forward.
    2. Watch the central plastic post on the inside of the guard so that it does not get hung up on the drive belt.

    3. When positioning the guard, make sure to tuck the belt underneath as it has a tendency to get stuck.
    4. As you fit the guard into position, make sure the slots on the front of the guard slide onto the fixed screws on the frame.

    5. Tips:
      • Make sure the boss on the inside center of the guard goes through the belt (it can get stuck on the bottom of the belt).
      • Do not force the guard; if it is aligned correctly, it will go into place.
      • Make sure the top of the guard near the top tube is aligned properly, with the grommet seated on both belt guards.
      • To make sure the guard is aligned correctly, check the alignment with the left-side belt guard. There should be no ledges anywhere.
      • Make sure the 2 front screws are correctly aligned.
      • Check the clearance between the power meter housing and the belt guard. You should see 3 mm or more space between these two at all positions of the power meter rotation.
    6. Once the guard is set in place, reinstall the guard screws. Use the 3 smaller screws to connect into the frame of the bike and the 4 larger screws into the left side guard.
    7. Tighten them down, DO NOT to over-tighten. If needed, squeeze the right and left side belt guards together to get the longer screws to start.
    8. Once the belt guard is set in place, use a 3 mm hex key to tighten the 2 screws holding the front of the guard down snug against the frame.
  6. Reinstall the belt guard cap.
    1. Use a 3 mm wrench to reinstall the plastic cap.
Note: The shoulder bolts must be aligned with the corresponding openings on the cap before tightening screws.

  7. Reinstall the right pedal, if previously installed.
    1. Hand-thread the right-side pedal into the corresponding crank arm length hole (matching the length selected on the left side) by turning it clockwise.
    2. Use a 15 mm pedal wrench (or corresponding hex key) to tighten the pedal until it is snug (torque specification may vary by pedal manufacturer).
  8. Plug the bike back into external power.
