How do I replace the battery on my Stages Power meter?

Modified on Fri, 21 Mar at 2:54 PM

The battery is simple and quick to change and does not require any tools. Before changing your cover, please note whether your Stages Power meter has our original or second-generation plastic housing design, as the process to change the battery is slightly different.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

First generation

To remove the battery:

Rotate the battery door into the "open" position and gently lift it outwards to remove the battery door from the unit

If needed, use your finger to tilt the battery and lift it from the compartment. Avoid using sharp tools to remove the battery, as they can cause damage to the electronics within the power meter.

To install the battery:

  1. Insert a brand new CR2032 battery into the battery compartment, with the positive (+)  side facing outward.
  2. Before replacing the door, inspect the o-ring to ensure it is properly sitting into the channel and not twisted, broken, or partially sticking out
  3. Re-insert the battery door into the power meter housing aligned with the "open" position
  4. Rotate the cover clockwise into the closed position to lock the battery door into place

Second and third-generation (left side)

To remove the battery:

Rotate the battery door into the "open" position and gently lift outward on the battery door to lift out the cover and battery

To install the new battery:

  1.  Insert the new CR2032 battery into the battery door, with the positive side facing the battery door.
  2. Before replacing the door, inspect the o-ring to ensure it is properly sitting into the channel and not twisted, broken, or partially sticking out
Note: If needed you may want to angle the bike so that it is not at a 90 degree angle where the o-ring can easily fall out
  3. Re-insert the battery door into the power meter housing aligned with the "open" position
  4. Rotate the cover clockwise into the closed position to lock the battery into place

Right-side power meter

To change the battery in a Stages right-side power meter, you will need a small Phillips screwdriver.

  1. Remove the two screws by turning counterclockwise using a small Phillips head screwdriver.
  2. For a new meter, pull the plastic tab to remove the battery, then re-install. For existing meters, lightly press on the edge of the battery to pop the battery out, then replace it with a new battery with the + (positive) side facing out.
Note: Do not use any sharp objects to pry out the battery. This can irreparably damage the circuit board inside.
  3. Carefully re-align the battery door with the housing and re-tighten the screws (clockwise) using the small Philips head screwdriver. CAUTION: Do not overtighten screws. The cover only needs to be hand-snugged. Overtightening the cover will damage the plastic housing.
