How to adjust the cleat tension on Stages SP3 and dual-sided pedals

Modified on Tue, 21 Dec, 2021 at 7:49 AM

Adjust the tension on your bicycle cleats to engage and disengage your shoes from the pedals. Tension should be tight enough that you can stand up and not disengage while pedaling, but not so tight that you have trouble disengaging from the pedal.

To adjust the cleat tension on Stages SP3 pedals and dual-sided pedal:

  1. Locate the tension set screw on the bicycle pedal.
  2. Using a 3 mm hex wrench, turn the screw as indicated to increase or decrease the amount of tension. Adjust the tension in small increments being careful to not back out the screw all the way.
  3. Repeat the same incremental adjustment on the other pedal, so you have equal tension on both cleats.
Rotate the hex wrench counter-clockwise to decrease cleat tension or clockwise to increase tension.
